Book 3, “Brothers of Myghal,” finds especial focus in the camaraderie and perspective of its male characters. Yet the females, too, grow in their own independence, building themselves for their own future mission. Their perspective is to be explored more in Book 4, “Daughters of Vanayema.”

Reader warning: Book 3 contains much stronger sexual elements than Books 1 and 2.

Crisis grips the north as Filiddor of Hesk demands possession of the Tolosian Peninsula. Princess Isatura, en route to confer with Duke Amerro, is abducted by Filiddor’s knights. Her newly betrothed, Lord Matteo, and his young brother Olaron, attempt a rescue. Battle ensues between the forces of King Carlomen and Prince Filiddor, and the long northern peace comes to an end.

Having retrieved the Eagle Staff of Terianh the Great, Kodi and Nikal are installed as dual War Wizards by Curdoz and the other Sages. Pausing on their journey in the port of Danzilet, Lyndz exerts independence and begins training with weaponry. Having become adept at her Moment Mastering Magic, she and Rainwing spy on a nearby Khestadone outpost where they find the Alkhaness preparing for battle. All are shocked to learn the secret of her identity.

And so, sooner than expected, war comes to them in Danzilet. In battle, the Staff is revealed in opposition to the magic of the Alkhaness. The men and Rainwing, and even Musca the dog, prove their great fighting skills and heroism. A temporary respite follows, and the group sails for the hidden land of Ulakel.

Joining them are Tiliruf’s fun-loving bodyguards, Manwul and Hadon, the astute Healer Shane, and the proud, winged Etoppsi males, Flamefur and Stormgale. Along with Idamé and Rainwing, Lyndz draws around her strong women who build on her courage for her secret task. This includes the return of Healers Ulna and Maru, perceiving a fresh Call from the Guardian.

Welcomed by its queen, the idyllic land of Ulakel affects the visitors profoundly. In council they learn of the great mission implied from earlier Visions and prepare themselves for this dangerous journey. They make many friends, including the part-Human, Qeteral prince, Lumin, and their presence encourages him in his Human inclinations and sense of independence. This creates conflict with the conservative and powerful Prince Hurlin, who is jealous of Kodi and disdainful of Tiliruf as heir to the failed imperial house. While in Ulakel, the Human men learn the disturbing secret of the long-ago making of the Eagle Staff.

And finally, Kodi falls in love.
